A boat trip can produce some of the best photographs of a vacation: an open skyline, reflections on the water, distant mountains, and city landmarks seen from a completely different angle. Unfortunately, it also puts phones and cameras in an environment where rain, spray, slippery surfaces, and sudden temperature changes can damage them.

Even devices advertised as water-resistant are not invulnerable. Their protection may be designed for controlled freshwater tests rather than repeated exposure to wind-driven rain or salt spray. Seals can also deteriorate with age, impact damage, or repair work.

The good news is that protecting your electronics on a boat does not require a complicated waterproof setup. A suitable case, a secure strap, and a few careful habits can keep your equipment safe while still allowing you to capture the view.

Wet decks, slippery hands, and unstable footing make drops more likely. Temperature changes matter too: moving a cold camera into a warm cabin can cause condensation on—and sometimes inside—the equipment. Effective preparation must therefore account for water, impact, loss, and humidity rather than rain alone.

Check Your Device’s IP Rating Before the Trip

Many modern phones have an Ingress Protection rating, usually written as IP67 or IP68. The first number describes protection from solids such as dust, while the second covers water under specified test conditions. IP67 generally includes temporary freshwater immersion; IP68 offers greater resistance under conditions defined by the manufacturer. Neither rating guarantees protection from repeated salt spray or wind-driven rain.

Resistance may weaken after drops, aging, or repairs. Cameras use terms such as “weather-sealed,” but there is no single universal standard behind that label. A sealed body-and-lens combination may tolerate light rain, but a proper cover remains sensible in persistent wet conditions.

Use a Waterproof Phone Case or Pouch

A floating pouch may help after a drop, but test it according to the manufacturer’s instructions because flotation depends on the combined weight of the phone and accessories.

Before first use, put dry tissue paper inside the empty pouch and test it as directed by the manufacturer. Inspect the closure for hair, sand, dirt, or folded edges, then attach a wrist strap or lanyard. Waterproofing cannot retrieve a phone from the bottom of a harbor.

Protect Your Camera and Lenses from Rain

A fitted rain cover shields the camera and lens while preserving access to the controls. Reusable covers are generally easier to handle in wind; disposable versions make useful backups. Check the fit with your intended lens before the trip.

In an emergency, a clean plastic bag can provide temporary protection. Make a small opening for the lens and secure it around the hood, but treat this only as a short-term solution.

Keep the lens hood attached and point the lens slightly downward when not shooting. Carry separate dry microfiber cloths for the glass and camera body.

Avoid changing lenses on an exposed deck. Choose a versatile lens before boarding and make any necessary changes in a sheltered area. Store the camera in a water-resistant zippered or roll-top bag; silica gel can control residual humidity but cannot compensate for dripping-wet equipment.

Before entering a much warmer space, seal the camera or phone in a plastic bag and leave it there until it approaches the indoor temperature. Moisture should collect mainly on the outside of the bag while the device warms gradually.

Do not remove the lens or use a heater or hair dryer to accelerate the process. If condensation appears, turn the device off and let it adjust in a dry, ventilated place. Wait until visible moisture disappears before charging it or opening compartments.

Keep Your Gear Secure on a Moving Boat

Water protection is only half the job. Use a wrist strap for a phone or compact camera and a neck or cross-body strap for larger equipment. Keep it attached on an open deck even when the water appears calm.

Never balance a device on a railing or leave it loose on a table or bench. Keep bags closed, stand with both feet firmly planted, and frame shots without leaning over the railing. A floating strap adds protection for compatible compact devices but should still remain secured to your wrist.

What to Do If Your Device Gets Wet

Act quickly, but do not shake the device or repeatedly press its buttons. That can move moisture farther into openings.

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Disconnect charging cables, microphones, headphones, and other accessories.
  3. Remove the outer case and, where the design allows it, the battery and memory card.
  4. Blot the exterior with a clean microfiber cloth.
  5. Hold exposed ports downward so trapped liquid can drain naturally.
  6. Leave the device in a dry, ventilated place.
  7. Do not connect a charger until the device and its ports are completely dry.
  8. Arrange professional inspection after significant saltwater exposure or complete immersion.

Do not bury wet electronics in rice. It does not reliably remove internal moisture, and dust or starch can enter ports. Silica gel is cleaner for residual humidity, but it cannot reverse corrosion. If salt water entered the device, arrange professional attention even if it still works.
